The inner boundary condition in the standard astrophysical model (Shakura, 1972; Lynden-Bell and Pringle, 1974) of a geometrically thin Keplerian accretion disk around a stellar object is investigated analytically. The theoretical basis of the standard formulation is reviewed, and a generalized boundary condition is proposed which allows for radial energy transport between disk and boundary layer and requires only that the total energy in the accretion process (the disk and boundary-layer luminosity) be radiated in the system. Numerical results are presented in graphs, and it is found that predictions based on the new boundary condition give boundary layers which generally have lower temperatures and are less luminous than the disks.
