The paper reports on the space and time dependence of plasmon emission in type III solar radio bursts. This dependence is inferred from four one-dimensional models of wave-particle interaction: free-streaming beam (homogeneous plasma); effects of random density fluctuations of the background plasma; quasi-linear beam relaxation; beam stabilization by nonlinear wave-wave interactions. The plasma wave energy density is shown in every case to become negligibly small as the heliocentric distance increases. Implications for low-frequency type III bursts of this result are discussed as a function of the beam characteristic parameters.
