The proposal is made to conduct a comprehensive review of the special functions of the eccentricity. Such a review would contribute to the development of recursive satellite theory for gravitational perturbations in several ways. Hansen's (1855) theory of the special functions of the eccentricity is considered, taking into account investigations conducted by Allan (1976) concerning the use of Hansen coefficients in studies of resonance problems. The use of the special functions of eccentricity in simplifying the development of satellite theories is illustrated, taking into consideration zonal harmonics, lunar-solar effects, and the tesseral resonance. Attention is given to a new recursion formula and the Newcomb operator representation of coefficients.
