A simple model of magnetic flux tube emergence is used to show the sharp decrease of plasma beta in the chromosphere of active stars and of the Sun as the heigth increases. This free magnetic field is unstable in relation to compression. It leads to impulsive magnetic energy transformation into thermal and kinetic plasma energy by pinch effect, which can manifest as a flare phenomenon.
