A Monte Carlo type simulation was used to calculate theoretical predictions of formation rates, space densities, and properties of magnitude- and color-selected observational samples of close detached white dwarf + main sequence binaries, sdOB + main sequence binaries, and double cores of planetary nebulae. In the simulation, a large number of zero-age binaries is created, with a distribution of orbital parameters as inferred from observations, and the evolution of these binaries is followed using simple analytical fits to detailed calculations of binary evolution from the literature. It is shown that the properties of these binaries depend significantly on assumptions that have to be made in binary evolution. Thus, this method is a good tool for constraining these assumptions.
