The time of formation of the sporadic E layer in the midlatitude ionosphere has been theoretically predicted to be 200 sec. Ionograms recorded at every successive moment at three neighboring midlatitude stations for the period September-October 1967 were used to verify the prediction. Twenty cases of the simultaneous formation of the sporadic E layer at all three stations were analyzed. The drift rate of the ion and neutral components of the sporadic E was determined, and variations in the vertical electron density were calculated by computer.
