The author gives an introduction to the problem of structure formation. The general ingredients of a scenario for structure formation are explained with special emphasis on the anisotropies induced in the cosmic microwave background. A short overview over six currently popular models is given; and a table, which compares the proposed scenarios with observations is presented and discussed.
