It is shown here that the fast recovery of the Vela pulsar from its Christmas 1988 glitch can be understood in terms of the dynamics of a portion of the pinned crustal superfluid, amounting to about 0.0054 of the total moment of inertia, linearly coupled to the star's superfluid interior. This fraction is consistent with values previously deduced for the Vela pulsar and others, including PSR0355 + 54, which also showed a large jump in the change in the spin-down rate of the pulsar. By modeling the postglitch relaxation, the vortex pinning energy is estimated at 0.3 MeV, also consistent with earlier estimates.
