The authors' starting point is Parker's theorem stating the non-existence of a three-dimensional neighbourhood of two (or less)-dimensional magnetohydrostatic equilibria, when only pressure and Lorentz forces are taken into account and the fields extend through infinite space. Motivated by the desire to explore the consequence of this theorem for slowly evolving structures in stellar atmospheres the authors formulate Parker's approach for finite domains. Their main conclusion is that in finite domains three-dimensional perturbations of two (or less)-dimensional fields do exist and they construct several examples.
