An ion tearing mode is suggested as a possible onset mechanism for magnetospheric substorms. Earlier work, based on a WKB approximation where the wavelength of the mode along the tail had to be restricted to values much smaller than the characteristic length for magnetic field variation in that direction, indicated that the ion tearing instability may not exist in the magnetotail. In the present theory the WKB method is abandoned and the exact energy principle for the (two-dimensional) Vlasov theory is used instead. The tail equilibrium is represented by two-dimensional self-consistent solutions. The computed minimizing modes have the shape of tearing modes. The characteristic length is by order of magnitude the length scale for the magnetic field variation. Results show that the ion tearing instability does in fact occur in the long wavelength regime and therefore is a possible onset mechanism.
