In this paper the stability of β Cephei stars is studied using the linear theory of radial non-adiabatic pulsation. The opacity used is an analytical fit to the standard OPAL values. Contrary to some previous results, we found no instability up to the tenth radial overtone. We think it is still too early to draw any firm conclusion on the excitation mechanism of β Cephei stars and that a re-examination of the κ-mechanism and other possible mechanisms should be undertaken.
