β Cephei stars are a group of short-period intrinsic variables on the upper main sequence. Finding the excitation mechanism for them and other early-type variables is a long standing problem. The new OPAL opacity tables show some significant enhancements with respect to the old Los Alamos opacity. The κ-mechanism proposed long ago becomes very likely to be the driving mechanism for β Cephei pulsators. The stability of β Cephei stars is studied using the linear theory of radial non-adiabatic pulsation. No stability is found up to the tenth radial overtone in the calculation. The authors suggest that the κ-mechanism might not be strong enough to excite β Cephei stars.
