The X-ray lifetime of a massive X-ray binary system depends critically on the evolutionary status (envelope expansion rate) of the optical components in these systems. It is shown that the apparent overluminosity of the latter stars is difficult to understand in terms of stellar wind losses during the main sequence. Unfortunately, their anomalous position in the HR-diagram precludes any definite conclusion regarding their evolutionary status, but it is argued that most of these stars are likely to be still on the main sequence.
