The observed spectral type of 17 A-type and 14 W-type W Uma binaries are compared with the expected type when their primary components are normal main sequence objects. For both groups the observed spectral type appears on average to be shifted towards the later spectral types. This shift corresponds to an excess of the mass and radius of the primary components with respect to the main sequence mass and radius in conformity with their observed spectral type. It is argued that neither for the W- nor all the A-type systems this excess should be explained as the result of a normal nuclear evolution of the system.
