By means of implicit radiation-hydrodynamic code which is based on an adaptive mesh method and uses a variable Eddington factor to close the moment equations of radiative transfer, theoretical light curves of exploding blue supergiants are computed and are compared to the early light curve data obtained for SN 1987A. In particular, the radiation hydrodynamic evolution of the supernova explosion of a 15 solar mass star is calculated for various explosion energies. With the exception of McNaught's data point, good fits to the light curve of the first ten days can be obtained from our model and we conclude that the explosion energy has been close to 1.3 10 to the 51st erg for a mass of the hydrogen-rich envelope of 10 solar mass. The failure of the models at very early times has likely to be attributed to NLTE-effects which are not included in our calculations. The importance of hydrogen recombination on the early light curve is investigated by a very simple model and it is demonstrated that its effect should not be neglected. Finally we show that the light curve is also affected by the detailed structure of the stellar model. Therefore the good agreement between the calculated light curve and that of SN 1987A should not be overrated and does not prove the validity of the stellar parameters given here.
