A peculiar dust tail of Comet Austin 1989c1 was observed before its perihelion passage. A theoretical calculation indicates that the tail comprises large particles of millimeter-submillimeter size. The calculation also shows that these particles were ejected from about 1000 d before its perihelion passage. This information provides evidence of strong activity at a large heliocentric distance of about 11 AU, while suggesting an abundant existence of such volatile materials as CO2 in the nucleus of this comet. The lifetime of the observed particles is longer than that of icy grains.
