The comet Kohoutek was discovered as a result of a search for the comet
Biela, which had not been observed since 1852. The discovery photograph,
which was taken at the Hamburg Observatory in Bergedorf on March 7,
1973, is reproduced. The orbital elements and brightness were predicted
on the basis of this photograph and observations on March 9 and 21.
