In the frame of a program to monitor the spectral variation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548, we found that the broad emission component of H-beta, which was clearly visible on the spectra taken in and earlier than Feb. 1992, nearly disappeared in May 1992. Only the narrow component and the very wide wings remained in the spectra taken on May 11 and 12. The continuum radiation from the nucleus also faded simultaneously. These spectral and photometric variations are similar to those observed in NGC 4151 in 1984. Our results suggest that the temporal translation of Seyfert galaxies from type 1 to type 2 and back is not a rare phenomenon and can occur with a time scale of only a few months.
