The direct influence of the planets on the precession and nutation of the earth's axis of rotation is derived, taking into consideration first order terms with respect to both the inclinations and eccentricities of planetary orbits. A theoretical solution is obtained by using the Poisson equations in a suitable form, retaining the largest terms sensitive only to the first powers of the ecliptic latitudes of the perturbing planets. For numerical results, only Venus, Mars, and Jupiter were taken into account. Results show that the largest influence is produced by Venus; the total nutational effect of the planets can amount to several parts in 0.0001 arcsec.
