Excitation mechanisms for the long-observed H2 emission of NGC 7027 are reviewed in this paper. It is found that the observed emission could be produced by shock excitation of an inhomogeneous molecular envelope. Interstellar formation processes of the exotic forms of molecular hydrogen H2(+), H3(+), and H3 are also discussed. It is found that the molecular ion H2(+) is produced readily by the ionization of H2. However, this ion is not easily observable since it lacks a readily distinguishable spectral signature at optical wavelengths. An abundance of the species H3(+) may also be produced in the molecular envelope, has a readily recognizable IR spectrum, and should be searched for in the future. The molecule H3 is not expected to be present in significant concentrations. A report of an unsuccessful spectrophotometric search for this molecule is presented.
