Mira Variables
Scientific paper
When are period changes real and not just a conspiracy of random variations? This vexing problem has to be tackled in studying the long term behaviour of Mira variables. Miras are complex pulsational variables for which the periods of even the best behaved stars are not well defined, and this makes the detection of real period changes a non-trivial business. In this paper some of the methods available are described and their performance compared on the ambiguous R Aurigae.
