Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Solar Magnetic Fields, Heliosphere: Current Sheets

Scientific paper

A detailed comparison of the spatial orientation of the mean plane of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) with the orientation of the magnetic dipole equator has been carried out. The HCS mean plane is shown to coincide almost entirely with the magnetic dipole equator. From this, in particular it follows that the dipole component of the magnetic field completely determines the total orientation of the HCS in space, while the higher-order components are responsible for the HCS configuration.
