The paper proposes an alternative to Poincare's classification of
linearly unstable periodic orbits associated with certain problems which
have two degrees of freedom. Poincare's approach, which is based on the
study of orbits in the configuration plane, is summarized. The new
approach, based on Morse's (1973) ideas, is explained.
