To determine the charge on dust grains in a hot gas, a statistical approach has been adopted in which the charge values are described as a set of discrete 'charge states' and the charge distribution function (DF) has been obtained. The results show that taking the mean value as representative of the charge on the grains may lead to substantial errors since DFs have usually a considerable spread. In addition, such mean value differs in some cases from the equilibrium charge calculated a la Spitzer. The shape of the distribution function and its mean value depend on the local thermodynamic conditions and on the dust size and dynamics; the width is proportional to the temperature of the gas only in the limit in which secondary emission is not important. This may have some consequences for the evolution and survival of dust grains in the intergalactic environment.
