A reevaluation of the importance of the N-14(e-, v)C-14(alpha, gamma)O-18 (NCO) reaction in the evolution of low-mass stars through the core helium flash is presented. It is found that, independent of the exact value of the C-14(alpha, gamma)O-18 reaction rate, the NCO reaction is unimportant. The core helium flash is examined as a local phenomenon and a local thermal stability criterion is derived.
