The paper considers the breaking of the first adiabatic invariant in the magnetic fields arising from the mirror instability. It has been proposed that turbulent shear in hot, tenuous, astrophysical plasmas causes the mirror instability to occur, and that this instability grows until it reaches an amplitude given by an expression in terms of the ion-ion collision frequency, and typical fluid velocities and scale lengths in the turbulence (Hall, 1980). It is shown that if the turbulent shear is sufficiently large, breaking of the first adiabatic invariant of the ions increases their effective collision frequency, with the result that the final wave amplitude is essentially independent of the ratio of the fluid velocity to scale length.
