The procedures used in optimizing the installation of the new Isaac Newton 2.5 m optical telescope at its new site at the Observatory of Roque de los Muchachos upon its move from its former location at Herstmonceaux are described. Knife edge tests and other measurements were carried out on the instrument at its old site to pinpoint factors contributing to bad seeing; these were then taken into consideration in designing the control conditions for the new facility. The major causes of bad seeing were identified as air near the surface of the primary mirror, air surrounding the prime focus cage, and possibly warm ambient air inside the dome. The first problem will be eliminated by cooling the mirror to 2 K below the temperature of ambient night air. Accumulation of air around the prime focus cage will be prevented by avoiding heat sources on the telescope. The ambient air of the dome will be kept at suitable temperatures by adequate insulation and an efficient ventilation system featuring a large ventilating slit opposite the dome slit.
