The distribution of the separations between quasars and a complete sample of Arp's (1981) companion galaxies is analyzed in order to test the hypothesis that the observed set of separations has a very low probability of being due to chance. It is demonstrated that it is possible to obtain an observationally unbiased complete sample of companion galaxies and use the data collected by Arp to study the distribution of nearest-neighbor distances. It is shown that there seem to be more small separations than expected for random quasars, significant at the 2.5 sigma level. Possible reasons for rejecting the null hypothesis, and their consequences for future observation programs, are discussed.
