An explicit and rigorous proof of gravothermal instability is proposed, working in the two-dimensional energy-angular momentum space, with a previously given collisional operator (Luciani and Pellat, 1987). The proof is mainly based on self-adjointness properties. Then, explicit forms are derived for the unstable 'directions' near the threshold, which turn out to be simple but nevertheless display the necessity of a two-dimensional phase-space treatment.
