The age of the galactic disk can be determined by comparing the positions of field giants with respect to the ascending giant branch of the oldest open clusters (e.g., NGC 188) in the HR diagram. However, the position of giants depends not only on age, but on abundance as well. The authors have shown that the spread of the heavy element abundance among field giants of the disk leaves the possibility to no more than a few per cent of these giants to be older than the open cluster NGC 188.
