The effect of heavy-element abundances in stellar atmospheres on the ionization structure of the galactic center is investigated. It is found that the observations of ionized neon are most readily fitted by a situation in which heavy elements are overabundant by a factor of 3 compared with solar values and ionization is provided by stars with effective temperatures around 40,000 K.
