By means of schematic line profile calculations based upon the Sobolev approximation (Castor, 1970), it is shown how spatial extension of the embedded, illuminating continuum source alters the character of resonance line profiles formed in a high-speed wind. The intended application for these calculations is to the winds of cataclysmic variables. The assumed wind geometry is spherically symmetric, but this does not determine the qualitative nature of the results obtained. An important finding is that, even when the wind is extremely opaque in the line of interest, the depth of minimum absorption need not be any greater than about half of the adjacent, unabsorbed continuum level, if the size of the continuum source is at least comparable with the wind's acceleration length scale.
