We give a positive answer to a conjecture of K. Astala, T. Iwaniec, and G.
Martin on reduced Beltrami equations. Moreover, we use it to study differential
expressions related to two-dimensional linear families of quasiregular mappings
and prove that the associated general Beltrami equation is unique.
