The relationship between meteors and atmospheric phenomena such as noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and enhanced airglow (AE) is considered theoretically, extending and refining the analysis of Rajchl (1986). The focus is on the transport by the general circulation of material produced by the interaction of the meteoroid with the atmosphere. The theoretical results are applied to data from optical and radar observations. It is found that complex structural (topological) and dynamic relations link meteors to NLCs and AE, with a general association of fireballs (via meteoric ions) with NLCs and faint meteors (via neutral dust) with AE.
