Based on the analysis of observational data it is found that near perihelion average photometric index values of two comet classes (the new comets and the periodic ones) are statistically different while distribution dispersions are the same. This is the reason why the distribution of the whole comet ensemble has two maxima (nn ≈ 4; np ≈ 6).
