The radial distributions of dark matter density and temperature in Ly alpha forest clouds are discussed in the framework of a 'minihalo' model in which the clouds consist mainly of hot ionized gas hydrostatically confined by dark mater potential wells (Rees 1986). This work shows that available observational data on the distribution of Ly alpha forest clouds in column density, in combination with information provided by the equation of state for the gas, provides a resonable basis for placing constriants on the shapes of the dark matter density and temperature distribution in terms of only two free parameters, both of which are directly related to the properties of the dark matter potential wells. The analysis of dark matter density and temperature distribution in the framework of the models of hydrostatic equilibrium of self-gravitating dark matter shows that dark matter density should be strongly peaked at the center of a cloud, while dark matter temperature should have minimum in the region. The qualitative similarity between the density-temperature structure of dark matter minihalos and the structure of dense interstellar clouds leads to the conjecture that an important process in the minihalo formation scenario may be some sort of thermal instability in the dark matter gas. In turn, this would imply cooling of the dark matter during the development of the thermal instabilty, which would suggest that the dark matter is composed of structure and/or charged interacting particles.
