The case of a neutron star permeated by a continuous flux of cosmic neutrinos is examined as an astrophysical situation which satisfies the criteria for maximizing the observable effects of the cosmological neutrino background. The cooling of the neutron star by scattering between the ultracold cosmic neutrinos and the stellar neutrinos is compared to the usual cooling processes of photon emission from the surface and the emission of internally generated neutrinos. The extreme assumption is made that the neutrinos are thermalized as they diffuse through the star. It is found that the cooling effects due to cosmic neutrinos are completely insignificant and that prospects for the astrophysical detection of the cosmic neutrino background are very discouraging.
