The author discusses the observations of three ZZ Ceti stars which most strongly suggest that oscillation mode changes occur in these stars on a very short time-scale. He demonstrates (1) that the reported mode change in VY Hor (= BPM 31594) is spurious; (2) that the evidence for a mode change in GD 385 is at best tentative and (3) that an alternative, plausible explanation in terms of beating is viable for BG CVn (= GD 154).
