A simple argument leading to Lynden-Bell's (1971) C method for the determination of the luminosity function from a magnitude-limited sample is proposed. The argument is shown to lead to an extended version of the C method after elementary one-step computations. Furthermore, while the original C method gives only its shape, the present method leads to a properly normalized luminosity function.
