Providing an easy interactive access to very large datasets of several billion sources is a challenge which need to be solved in the next few years. The CDS (Strasbourg, France) has recently been working on new tools for an optimal management of large catalogues and surveys, using as a testbed the preliminary point source catalogues from the near infrared surveys 2MASS and DENIS. We will present some of the solutions which are already made available, or which are still being prototyped, for providing optimized access to these very large databases, and related data mining tools. Examples of the Aladin and VizieR services show how compression methods, optimized indexing, and interoperability of several services contribute to build efficient tools for an optimal use of large catalogues.
