A criterion for the orbital eccentricity evaluated for objects moving in a spherically symmetric force field with mass distribution M(r) ∝ rβ, based on the radial component rate in total kinetic energy is proposed. The latter quantity preserves a nearly constant value over a sufficiently large fraction of the orbit, admitting thus its instantaneous value to be a measure of the eccentricity.
