Changes in the surface pressure field of the earth above its northern hemisphere after the maxima of sufficiently strong and relatively isolated geomagnetic storms are studied in the present article, based on daily weather maps for the period of 1880-1974. It is found that the maximum increase in atmospheric instability after geomagnetic storms takes place mainly above oceans, especially in regions where cool and warm currents come together, as well as near the 'ocean-land' boundary. Moreover, the entry of the earth into a corpuscular stream is accompanied by pronounced deepening of the Icelandic and Aleutian lows, and almost simultaneously by a pressure increase over Europe and Alaska. All these effects are clearest in the cold period of the year and especially in those cases when the corpuscular stream under consideration is not preceded by another stream close to it (the role of the initial conditions).
