The paper considers the generation of gravity, boundary, and acoustic waves by water vapor, ozone, and thermospheric absorption. Thermospheric absorption of solar radiation is shown to be the cause of the dominant response of the terminator. The terminator generates a ducted acoustic wave at altitudes below 100 km and a boundary wave concentrated along the mesopause. The failure of the terminator to generate gravity waves is not due to the inability of a supersonic source to generate waves but to the absence of a heat source that varies in a certain exponential manner below the thermosphere. The analysis in conjunction with deduced characteristics of the Martian terminator waves seem to confirm the absence of any strong radiation absorbers growing exponentially with height below the Martian ionosphere.
