Accretion onto a compact object from a medium containing a density gradient was studied. Using a three dimensional numerical calculation, it is shown that the mass accretion rate is very close to the Bondi-Hoyle value (when pressure effects are neglected). Only a few percent of the angular momentum deposited into the accretion cylinder are accreted by the compact object. This could have important consequences in the case of neutron stars and white dwarfs accreting from a stellar wind.
