The multiple mirror telescope (MMT) at the Mt. Hopkins Observatory is described. The MMT uses lasers, six primary mirrors, and on-line computers to produce the light-gathering power equivalent to a conventional telescope with a 176 in. diameter aperture. The optics system, the use of separate reflectors, electronic hardware, and an altitude-azimuth mount are discussed. The computer control system will automatically realign the MMT, and two diode-array instruments will be operated: the 'redshift machine', a high-gain spectrometer to measure the shift toward longer or red wavelengths in the light from distant galaxies, and a charge-coupled camera to be used as a television camera to produce images of faint objects. Increased light collecting ability of the MMT is discussed, and it is noted that it is the largest telescope specifically constructed for infrared observations. By looking in the infrared region of the spectrum, the MMT is expected to reveal new information about the birth of stars, and better define conditions in the Milky Way and in the cores of more active galaxies.
