OMEGA/Mars Express has mapped almost the entire surface with a footprint of 2 to 5 km, and some 10% at sampling < 400m. On each pixel, the spectrum has been acquired from 0.35 to 5.1 micrometer, enabling to retrieve the composition of major species through diagnostic absorption features. From the identification and mapping of the rock forming minerals (mafic silicates, ferric oxides, hydrated phyllosilicates and sulfates), the H2O and CO2 frosts, ices and clouds, major (CO2) and minor (H2O, CO) atmospheric species, surface evolution at different timescales can be derived, from seasonal variations to geological processes. The major outcomes will be presented and discussed, with an emphasis on the role water played over the earlier eras. A tentative interpretation in terms of planetary activity will be proposed, in a comparative planetology context.
