The passive ohmic dissipation of force-free magnetic fields in low-pressure inhomogeneously conductive plasmas such as those encountered in many astrophysical objects is investigated theoretically. A general theory is developed and applied to the case of a weakly curved twisted attached magnetic loop in the solar atmosphere, assuming a force-free field within the loop. It is argued that the uniformly twisted field corresponds to the condition of minimal total magnetic energy, and that the variable-sign distribution proposed by Taylor (1974) has no physical basis.
