The discrepancy between orbital solutions for the high-luminosity LMC X-ray transient A0538-66 derived by Corbet et al. (1985) and by Hutchings et al. (1985) is addressed. Simulation results suggest that these differences are due to low-level residual activity in the system, with the apparent velocity shifts in the spectra being contaminated by weak emission from other places in the system than the B2III primary. It is suggested that the absence of H-alpha and He-II emission can be used as an accurate indication of true nonactivity.
