Only a century ago the care and ``restoration'' of well-used library collections was a relatively straightforward matter. In those rare cases where funding and expertise were available -- and they were rare -- books and manuscripts were cleaned, repaired, and rebound. Papyri were tucked into wooden drawers, and glass plates into wooden boxes. Too often the methods and materials used for storage and repair inadvertently introduced powerful deteriorative forces, but not until decades after they were set in motion would their effects be confronted. At the time of implementation, the path to corrective treatment seemed straight and narrow. Today we are wiser. We recognize the confounding array of preservation challenges faced by cultural repositories as the range of information media and delivery mechanisms continues to proliferate. Solutions are in some cases well understood if barely affordable, and are sometimes entirely elusive. Can we make sense of this situation?
