The development of computer systems for the Mercury project is presented. An automatic tracking FPS-16 transponder radar provided observations to an IBM 704 computer. The role of the computer in the Go/No Go flight procedure is discussed along with a Brute-force method for formulas used to perform computer calculations. Programs for the free flight stage of the project are investigated, and the computer predicted splashdown of an unmanned test vehicle after an assumed transponder failure is also presented.
